Missing is that small town feel that many lakesides’ communities process and the mom-and-pop warmth that draws in visitors for lakeside vacationing. McHenry the host community to the lake by virtue of it being the only established town that sits directly on the lake’s northern end consists mainly of small to mid-size business that cater mostly to its seasonal inhabitants. Garrett that is the county of record for Deep Creek Lake and home to a small number of permanent residents by proportion to the number of tourists that flock here each summer. The lakeshore is occupied with every size property imaginable from one-of-a-kind estates to cookie cutter chalets from gated properties to cottages that look to be ready to fall head long into the water. There are state parks with beach like areas (little rocky/bring water shoes) a children's discovery center, a nice Simon Pearce glassblowing factory with demo and retail shop, farmers' markets, and a few really really casual good dining places and a lot of mediocre or awful dining spots.Maryland’s largest fresh water lake is home to a selection of homes/cottages both owner occupied and rentals that plays host to a sizable population of vacationers from the Pittsburg, Baltimore DC area and further. This lake is a great family vacation spot and over the years, we've been back many times. For lake lovers, this is your every day commute, so make sure you're ok with the situation. Many of the homes are quite a distance from the lake itself and the slopes can be treacherous, wooded, and terribly steep and slippery. Important tip: advice when renting a property at lakefront be sure you know what the slope and distance to the lake is as well as where you will have access to the lake and if you have a dock/shared dock. You can kayak there also some people felt that in certain channels the wake from other boats was too disruptive for safe kayaking, fyi. Most of us used a float device or life jacket. We went swimming off the boat and off the dock area, but be warned, the current in the lake is stronger than it appears. The colors of the vegetation then are awesome bright greens and stunning flowers. The weather in July was in the mid 70s to low 80s with a bit of humidity, and comfortable and coolish at night around 60. The community scene is charming, rustic, and oh so casual. We got a pontoon boat for five days Mon through Fri since Sun and Sat are set up and check out days. It's the perfect lake for towing kids on a sturdy raft or waterskiing. There are several companies at Deep Creek for renting boats by day, week, hour etc. Many other lake destinations have limited boat rentals or even none. One of the things we like best is the ease of renting a boat at Deep Creek, which for us, is an essential element. The weakness is the shopping scene is minimal and basic. The countryside is gorgeous the pace is quiet and serene the locally-grown food is delightful and although the area is definitely rural, there are sufficient supermarkets and other suppliers, but a little further apart in Oakland, Md., and in McHenry, Md. We rented a nice lakefront house and recommend Dreamers' Inn with Long and Foster for two or even three couples. Get away from the cities (Wash., DC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore) to mountains of green hills and cool water and summer climates into a rental cabin, house or condo. WE were not actually staying at the "State Park" but that is the only heading I could find on Trip Advisor for Deep Creek Lake. Deep Creek Lake, Md., is one of the finest, open country lake scenes in my book.
